psychological assessment & diagnosis

a comprehensive examination of your child’s developmental, emotional, behavioural and/or intellectual/academic presentation

registered psychology practitioners are regulated health professionals who can diagnose psychological disorders

an accurate diagnosis, which is often found in the conclusion of a psychological assessment report, is an important starting point in attaining appropriate support for your child

a diagnosis is not always appropriate or necessary, however, psychological assessment reports should always include thorough recommendations for positive change

therapy

individual therapy with children can help them learn to manage their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in more positive ways

often, a child’s negative mood/behaviour is in reaction to his or her environment

family therapy provides an opportunity for all participating family members to express their thoughts, feelings, and goals, so that everyone may be validated and contribute towards positive change

family therapy helps family members more clearly understand their roles in the child’s difficulties, so that a plan for positive change in the whole family may be developed, increasing the likelihood of positive change in the child

why have my child assessed?

your child’s difficulties interfere significantly with his/her daily functioning and may even affect others negatively

to explain your child’s apparent difficulties in a thorough and understandable way

to develop a comprehensive plan that may be shared with others (i.e. family, doctor, school) to decrease and possibly eliminate your child’s difficulties at home, at school, and in public

consultation

the mental health system can be difficult to navigate
often, parents are simply looking for guidance about whether or not they should be concerned about their child’s development, behaviour, etc… and/or direction regarding the services/support their child should receive

i offer brief consultations that are comprised of:
a) parents completing an online developmental history questionnaire
b) e-mail/telephone follow up
c) if appropriate, additional online questionnaires for parents and teachers

the goal is to efficiently gather information about your child, so that i may provide you with valuable feedback regarding your child’s challenges, in a timely fashion, to better inform the best next steps you should take to support your child

what is the hourly rate for your psychological services?
my fee is $200 per hour of therapeutic support, consultation or assessment time
i accept cash, cheque, e-transfer and credit card payment
are psychological services are covered by OHIP?
unfortunately, no
however, many private insurance plans do cover psychological assessment, and/or therapy
fees are paid at the time of appointment, and a receipt is provided
this receipt should be submitted for reimbursement by your insurance company
please check with your insurance provider regarding details of your coverage
what is the assessment process?
parents complete a questionnaire regarding their child’s developmental history
your child and i complete ability and achievement testing, beginning at 10:30am-noon, we break for lunch and then resume between 1-3pm
further testing may need to be completed on another day
parent and teacher questionnaires are delivered and completed online
